As I have completed the design process of my brand, it’s now time to create the app.

UX Teardown

In order to get an idea of how an app is laid out, it’s best that we analyse other banking apps and figure out what works well and what doesn’t. I decided to use my own banking app, Bank of Ireland, as it’s the only banking app I have. As you can see below, the app isn’t aesthetically pleasing, but it suffices.

Login Screen

In order to login to the app, you have to put in a six digit password. You don’t have to put in the full password, only three digits, but these digits change every time you log into the app. I don’t mind doing this, but I can see how it could be a nuisance to people as it’s another password to remember. I think it would be useful if there was a FaceID feature as it’s quicker and more secure. If FaceID doesn’t work, then I think a password would be an appropriate backup.

Home Screen

The home screen contains features such as your total balance, the option to send money, charts tracking and comparing your monthly spending and articles and advice from the bank. I think that the bank balance should be front and centre, when i want to quickly check what’s in my account, i want the amount to be the first thing i see, and exit the app. In this app, i feel as if the total balance is a bit lost as it’s small and blends in with the rest of the UI. I actually like the pieces of advice that the bank gives as i think its useful, such as warning me about scams and what to do if i need to figure out its them or a scam. I also like the insights feature, i like the fact i can see the activity of my money each month. One thing i find a bit confusing is the ‘send money’ feature. I don’t understand why it’s there as there’s a payments section in the app where you can do the exact same thing. Maybe they thought it would be quicker and convenient to the user if it’s in the home page, but i really don’t think it’s necessary. Overall, i think the features are good but the layout and design require upgrades. In addition to this, i find the grey background dull and unnecessary.
