After figuring out the fundamentals of my brand, it’s time to start the design process.
The first step of the design process is to choose a font. As my brand is called ‘Fairi’, I initially thought that the typographic style I would employ for my brand would be a dainty handwritten effect as I thought it depicted a Fairy’s handwriting.
After consulting with my tutor, he suggested to change the handwritten effect to a serif font, as a serif style font would be traditionally used in story books which would make more sense for my brand. As well as this, he suggested to change the spelling of ‘Fairi’ to ‘Fairie’ as the ‘ie’ could represent Ireland - ie is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD).
The first type I investigated was Oraniebaum, but I felt it was too bland for what I had in mind.
Next, I looked at Prata**.** Although I thought it had potential, I felt the gaps between the letters were too big but kerning could be applied to decrease the size of the gap. However, I love the letterforms.
Then I went on to look at Old Standard TT. ****However, I quickly rejected this as I am ****not a fan of the letterforms.
The next one up was Newsreader. However, I realised that I only liked aspects of the font, such as the bold version and the bendy serifs, which I think fits the magical theme well.
