In this weeks lecture, we looked at colour and its impact on design.

The Meaning of Colours

Each colour has different meanings that will be important for me to consider when choosing colours for my project. For example:

Red- Warning, Danger, Love

Blue- Trust, calm

Orange- Friendly

Purple- Royalty, creativity

Yellow-Happiness

White- Purity

Green- Jealousy, Greed, Nature

Black- Death, Evil

I think it’s interesting how each of these colours has stereotypical uses in branding depending on the company, such as most banking brands adopting blue to look like they’re trustworthy, but I’m very interested in how colours can be used in unconventional ways to try and display something different by a brand, which would help its recognisability and differentiability. This is something i’d like to explore in my brand, to make it stand out.

Meaning of Colours in Different Cultures

As well as learning about the meaning of colours, we also looked at what colours represent in different cultures. I found this aspect of the lesson particularly interesting as colours have different meanings in different cultures. For instance, white represents purity and peace in Europe, whereas in Asia, it represents death and unhappiness. I think it’s essential that designers have an understanding of the different meanings of colours in different cultures as they need to be careful with their colour choices if they want their work to be successful globally.
