This week, we were given the task to watch Wilson Minors speech ‘When we Build’. Wilson Minor is a Product designer currently working at Apple. Minor was a part of the team that redesigned apple.com.
In his speech, ‘When we build,’ he discusses how design changes and impacts the world we live in.
He quotes Marshall Mc Luhan “We shape our tools, and our tools shape us.” Things we make, make a new environment which changes our outlook.
Minor spoke about how the invention of the car shaped the environment in the 20th century- screen is as important in the 21st . What we choose to surround ourselves with, will shape what we’ll become. As designers, we’re not just making pretty interfaces; in fact, we are in the process of making the environment were we will spend most of the time in the next stages of our lives. What do we want that environment to feel like? I find these statements really interesting as when you’re designing something, you never think of how that design could potentially impact the future.
Overall, I found this speech fascinating as it really opened my eyes to see how design becomes apart of history and our evolution as human beings.
